As the colder weather sets in many people start to experience issues with their home’s furnace. There are many things that can go wrong with a furnace but many issues can be detected before having to bring in a professional.
If your furnace isn’t turning on or is blowing cold air, we’ve put together a short list of things that you can check yourself before calling a furnace repair expert at Donnelly’s.
1. Check The Filter
If your furnace overheats, it will shut itself off as a safety precaution. The most common solution is just to change the air filter. When the air filter is too dirty, it can block airflow and cause the furnace to overheat.
2. Check The Pilot Light
Some older furnace models have a pilot light that can go out, making it impossible for the furnace to heat the air. Look in your furnace manual and find directions on how to relight the pilot. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact us!
3. Check The Thermostat
When you have it in the “on” position, it will keep blowing air through the vents, even when the furnace isn’t running. By switching it to “auto” you can be sure that the fan will only blow when the furnace is running.
Note: You can also try to get the furnace to turn on by raising the thermostat to its highest temperature setting.
4. Check The Power
Check the fuse/breaker at the electrical panel for the furnace to make sure the breaker has not tripped. Make sure the power switch next to the furnace is in the “On” position.
5. Check The Gas Supply
Check to make sure the gas control valve to the furnace is open. A disruption of the gas supply to your heating system could leave your heating system without fuel.
Note: If you smell gas, please leave your home immediately and call Donnelly’s!
